Position Description

The Department of Political Science at Texas State University invites applications for an assistant professor of practice or associate professor of practice in public administration to begin fall 2018. This position will be a non-tenure-line, nine-month faculty position having a contract term not to exceed five years, subject to annual reappointment review, and renewable upon expiration of the initial term. Applicants must be able and willing to teach day and evening courses in San Marcos, Austin, and Round Rock. Primary responsibilities include:

1. Teach in both the undergraduate and graduate programs in public administration.
2. Provide external relations connecting students with the practitioner community and alumni through interface with professional organizations and individuals on and off campus, public and nonprofit entities.
3. Assist the MPA program director with recruitment, advising, and internship and job placements of students in both the undergraduate and graduate programs in PA.
4. Assist with the supervision of internships.

Required Qualifications

1. Earned Ph.D. degree in public administration, political science, or related field or J.D. from an accredited university is required at the time of appointment.
2. A significant number of documented years of professional experience at the senior level in the public or nonprofit sectors leading and managing programs; for the rank of assistant professor, a minimum of 5 years, and for associate professor, a minimum of 10 years.
3. Relevant experience presenting at professional conferences and workshops.
4. Leadership positions in relevant professional associations, recognition by peers, or awards for contributions to the profession and/or industry.

To be eligible for hire at the associate professor rank, candidate must meet the requirements for that rank as established by the department. The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on university and department established standards.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Public or nonprofit professional experience in policy, finance, or management.
2. Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
3. Ability to work in a diverse environment.
4. Prior teaching experience at the university or community college level.
5. 18 or more graduate credits in political science.
6. Proficiency in spreadsheets, databases, and data analysis.
