Position Description

The Department of Physics at Texas State University seeks applicants for a tenure track position in astrophysics at the assistant professor rank effective Fall 2018. The successful candidate will be expected to secure external funding and establish a vibrant research program advising undergraduate and master’s students, be committed to excellence in teaching introductory and advanced courses in physics and astrophysics, and engage in service at departmental, university, and/or professional levels. Start-up will be provided.

Required Qualifications

1) Successful applicants will have an earned Ph.D. in, physics, astrophysics, or a closely related field; postdoctoral or equivalent experience; a demonstrated record of research, such as peer-reviewed publications; and strong commitment to excellence in teaching.
2) Expertise in multi-wavelength optical and X-ray data analysis and interpretation; demonstrated expertise in astrophysics of neutron stars and other high-energy sources; and a demonstrated track record of external funding in support of research including at high-energy observatories such as Chandra X-ray Observatory.
3) Experience teaching physics at the introductory and advanced levels; experience working with Learning Assistants or equivalent models of research-based undergraduate instruction; experience in instructing advanced undergraduate laboratory physics courses using a project-based approach; and experience supervising student research.
4) Experience running and maintaining a university observatory.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who can effectively mentor undergraduate and graduate students and who have experience in astronomy-related outreach to the public (including observatory sessions), in leading student organizations such as astronomy clubs, and in taking students and telescopes to remote off-campus viewing locations.
