Position Description

The Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) at Texas State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Recreation and Leisure Services. The Department presently has 51 fulltime faculty serving over 3,300 undergraduate and graduate students seeking degrees in athletic training, exercise and sports science, health education, and recreation administration. Our academic programs offer both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The Recreation Division includes both undergraduate and graduate specializations in therapeutic recreation and recreation management. At the undergraduate level, both specialties are accredited by COPART.

The successful candidate will be a strong teacher and researcher, joining eight fulltime faculty to serve 350+ undergraduate and graduate majors. The position includes an expectation of consistent research supported with internal and external funding and resulting in peer reviewed publications in journals appropriate to the specialization. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in outdoor recreation, leadership, and recreation administration; advise students; and provide community engagement and professional service. Expertise in the area of outdoor recreation leadership, campus recreation, and underserved youth are highly desirable.

Required Qualifications

• Earned doctorate in recreation or related field. If doctorate is in a field other than recreation, a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in recreation are required; and
• Demonstrable evidence of research and scholarship.

Preferred Qualifications

• Research area that is congruent with existing lines of research within the Division of Recreation Administration;
• Experience or participation in grant writing and obtaining funding for research and service learning projects;
• Experience in fulltime university teaching demonstrating the ability to teach several different courses in a curriculum, including graduate level and field-based teaching;
• Experience with mentoring graduate assistants and/or graduate independent studies;
• A work history that includes at least three years of professional practice, including leadership, planning, and supervision in an outdoor recreation setting;
• Demonstrated engagement in program, university and professional service activities and organizations; and
• Commitment to working collaboratively with department faculty, staff, and others throughout the institution/organization.
