Position Description

Texas State invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Education. The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Education and reports to the Provost of the University. The Dean is responsible for academic leadership of the College in its efforts to recruit, develop, retain, and evaluate a diverse and distinguished faculty; to serve its various communities; to provide high quality instructional programs and support academic activities of the varied units within the College; to increase scholarly production and externally funded research activity; to provide effective advising and other academic services, including certification of candidates for graduation; to promote collaborative relationships with P-16 entities and professional, educational, and community organizations. The Dean is also responsible for advocating for the College and working with University Advancement in fundraising and development efforts.

With approximately 5,100 undergraduates, 1,100 graduate students, and 350 faculty, the College offers a wide range of degrees, including BA, BS, MA, MS, MEd, MSRLS, SSP, EdD and PhD. The College is comprised of 3 academic units: the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction; Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education and School Psychology; and Health and Human Performance. The College is home to the Assessment and Counseling Clinic; the Clinic for Autism Research, Evaluation and Support; the Central Texas Writing Project; the Tomás Rivera Mexican-American Children’s Book Award; the LBJ Institute for STEM Education and Research; the Education Institute; and the Institute for Play Therapy.

The College of Education is located on the San Marcos campus and holds classes on both the San Marcos and Round Rock campuses. San Marcos is part of the great Austin metropolitan area with over 2 million residents. Located in the Texas Hill Country, where backland prairies roll into beautiful hills, Texas State enjoys a setting that is unique among Texas universities. Required Qualifications

Required qualifications include the following: (1) earned doctorate in an academic discipline within the college; (2) record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service appropriate to the rank of professor in an academic unit within the College; (3) university administrative experience at the level of department chair, school director, dean or higher (including experience with budgets, the tenure and promotion process, faculty and staff hiring, program development and assessment); and (4) demonstrated experience with and commitment to the practice of shared governance.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include: (1) experience leading a large university-based educator preparation program; (2) familiarity with the disciplines represented in the College and knowledge of current issues within colleges of education and public education; (3) experience in supporting scholarship and obtaining and managing external funding; (4) experience in innovative curriculum development and delivery; academic program accreditation; and credentialing; (5) commitment to recruiting and meeting the educational needs of diverse groups, including a diverse faculty and student body in line with the university’s HSI status; (6) experience in developing and/or sustaining university-school and community partnerships; and (7) experience in a doctorate-granting department or college.
